Engineering Manager

Jade Liu serves as Engineering Manager at LEECO, where he leads the engineering function responsible for friction hinge design, materials development, and validation testing. He joined LEECO in March 2008 and has spent his career building deep specialization in torque mechanism engineering — the discipline of designing hinges that maintain controlled positional resistance through tens of thousands of operational cycles.

His technical work focuses on the application engineering and qualification of friction hinges for demanding environments: medical equipment requiring sub-millimeter dimensional precision, marine applications requiring stainless steel construction validated against salt spray corrosion, and automotive applications operating under IATF 16949-compliant process control. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, complemented by a Master's degree in International Business Administration from Shih Hsin University — a combination that allows him to bridge engineering decisions and commercial program management.

Internally at LEECO, Jade has led the development of measurement and calibration infrastructure that underpins the company's IATF 16949 and ISO 9001 quality systems, including the in-house torque calibration capabilities used for product qualification and production verification.

Engineering Approach

Jade's work is grounded in the principle that a friction hinge is not a discrete component but a long-cycle mechanical system. A hinge that performs to specification on cycle one must continue to perform to specification on cycle 30,000 — across the operating temperature range, after material aging, and after exposure to the environmental conditions of its end application. This perspective shapes how LEECO's engineering team approaches material selection, tolerance stack-up, and validation testing for every new program.

Technical Specializations

Torque mechanism design Friction hinges, constant torque hinges, and detent hinges across barrel, integrated, and insert configurations
Material selection Stainless steel grades for corrosion resistance, copper alloys for friction characteristics, and surface treatments
Fatigue & cycle life testing Durability validation for 30,000-cycle and higher operational requirements
CAE simulation Finite element analysis for stress distribution and torque modeling
Tooling design Precision stamping and assembly tooling for hinge production
Quality control systems IATF 16949 process control, in-house calibration, and statistical process monitoring

Selected Engineering Programs

The following programs illustrate the technical scope of Jade's engineering leadership at LEECO. Specific customers are not named due to confidentiality, but each represents a class of application LEECO continues to serve.

Sub-3mm Slim Friction Hinge for Medical Applications

Led the development of a sub-3mm slim barrel friction hinge for portable medical device applications. The program required achieving 30,000-cycle operational durability while maintaining torque consistency within tight tolerances — a particularly challenging combination at this form factor. Successful qualification of this hinge expanded LEECO's product portfolio into a class of compact medical equipment that conventional friction hinge designs cannot serve.

Stainless Steel Torque Hinge for Marine Applications

Designed a stainless steel torque hinge engineered for sustained exposure to marine environments. Material selection focused on corrosion-resistant stainless steel grades, with the assembly validated for long-term performance under salt spray and humidity stress conditions. This product line addresses the reliability requirements of equipment operating aboard vessels and in coastal installations, where standard hinge materials fail prematurely.

In-House Torque Calibration System

Implemented LEECO's in-house torque calibration system to support production verification and product qualification testing. The system improved production torque consistency by 16% and reduced reliance on external calibration services, strengthening the overall traceability of LEECO's quality control processes under IATF 16949 and ISO 9001.
